Our range is overseen at all times by certified and experienced Range Safety Officers (RSOs). Their job is to ensure all safety protocols are strictly followed, providing helpful advice and maintaining a secure environment for everyone.

Curious about a specific model before you buy? We offer a selection of our most popular handguns and rifles for rental, allowing you to “try before you buy” (subject to all applicable laws and range policies).

Owning a firearm is a serious constitutional right that comes with significant responsibilities. This right is governed by the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 (FCA). At Hot Power Arms, we are champions of safe, legal, and ethical ownership. This guide provides a general overview of your duties under the law. It is not a substitute for legal advice, and we urge all prospective and current owners to familiarise themselves with the Act in its entirety.

DON'T Carry a Firearm Openly or Brandish It
DON'T Lend or Transfer Your Firearm
You may not transfer possession of your firearm to any other person, including a spouse or family member, unless they also hold a valid licence for that specific firearm. Loaning your gun is illegal.
DON'T Handle a Firearm Under the Influence
There is a zero-tolerance policy. It is a severe criminal offence to handle a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or any substance with a narcotic effect.
DON'T Neglect Your Responsibility
Your firearm’s security is your responsibility 24/7. Never leave it unattended in a vehicle or any place where an unauthorised person, especially a child, could possibly access it.

For Self-Defence (Section 13 Licence)

- Top Choices: Compact or sub-compact semi-automatic pistols in 9mm are the global standard. They offer a good balance of magazine capacity, manageable recoil, and ammunition availability. Brands like Glock (G19, G43X), CZ (P-10 C), and Smith & Wesson (M&P Shield) are excellent starting points.
- Key Consideration: How does it feel in your hand? Can you comfortably reach all the controls? We strongly recommend trying different models at our range before you buy.
For Sport Shooting (Section 15 or 16 Licence)
Focus: Accuracy, capacity, customisation potential.
Top Choices: The “best” firearm depends entirely on the sport (IPSC, IDPA, Steel Challenge, etc.). Full-size 9mm pistols like the CZ Shadow 2, Glock 34, or Tanfoglio Stock series are dominant in many handgun disciplines. For rifle sports, platforms like the AR-15 for semi-auto matches or bolt-action rifles from Howa or Tikka for precision shooting are popular.

How long does the firearm licensing process take?
This varies significantly. After submitting your application to SAPS, the process can take anywhere from a few months to over a year. Patience and ensuring your application is perfectly completed are key. We can assist in vetting your paperwork.
Can I own more than one firearm for self-defence?
Under the current FCA, you are generally limited to one handgun or shotgun licenced under Section 13 for self-defence. Additional firearms must be licenced for other purposes like sport or hunting.
What is the difference between a Section 15 and Section 16 licence?
Section 15 (Occasional) is for someone who hunts or shoots sport occasionally. Section 16 (Dedicated) is for a proven, active member of an accredited hunting or sport-shooting association. A Section 16 licence allows you to own more firearms and semi-automatic rifles.
Do I need a licence for a pepper spray or an air rifle?
You do not need a licence for pepper spray in South Africa. For air rifles, if the power is below a certain threshold (generally 6 ft-lbs / 8 joules), you do not need a licence. High-powered air rifles do require a firearm licence. We can advise you on specific models.
