A good cleaning rod lets you push brushes, jags and patches through the bore from the breech end. One-piece rods are stiffer and kinder to the bore than jointed rods.

Use a bore guide where possible to protect the crown and chamber.

Check the calibre and thread before buying.

Regular cleaning removes fouling and moisture that cause rust and loss of accuracy. Make sure the firearm is unloaded before cleaning, work in a well-ventilated area, and store cleaned firearms in a dry safe with a light protective coat of oil.
